Urban Mobility

Following the increasing importance of the urban environment, the KIT Mobility Systems Center sets a special research focus on the field of urban mobility. Research within this field focuses on a holistic understanding of the needs and challenges for the mobility of people and goods in condensed urban environments including the development of sophisticated technical solutions, services and products.

The overall goal is to create and maintain a city as livable environments with high amenity values while providing a high level of mobility, following the needs of the user. Mobility is a key factor to provide access to workplaces, facilities and social activities but it should not dominate the urban environment.

The KIT Mobility Systems Center follows a seamless mobility approach towards a user-centric and holistically harmonized mobility system, making use of newest green technologies to minimize negative side effects of transportation like air pollution, noise and use of valuable urban living space. The user shall be provided with safe, reliable, easily accessible, sustainable, flexible and cost-effective mobility options in a harmonized intermodal network to reach highest levels of acceptance. For the realization of this vision, the center pools its competences across disciplines and is in intense cooperation and coordination with a broad network of partners from industry as well as politics.

The research for urban mobility within the center covers a wide range of topics and a plethora of projects. It ranges from basic understanding of user needs and external drivers over the development of enabling technologies for sustainable mobility like electric propulsion, renewable fuels, automated driving or advanced routing up to the development of completely new vehicle and mobility concepts and the methodology needed for development and validation in the best interest of the user and his needs.
